Nov. 11 Programs Honor Veterans, Active Military with Discounts

Old Sturbridge Village celebrates the nation's military history with special programs and reduced admission fees for military personnel on Tuesday, Nov. 11, 2008.

All U.S. veterans will receive half-price admission for the day. Active military personnel receive year-round half-price admission to OSV, and their families receive a 20 percent discount on admission.

Village interpreters will be costumed as historical soldiers, from a 1775 "minute man" to a Civil War (Union) combatant of 1865. Members of the Sturbridge Militia will invite visitors to drill and march on the Common, and demonstrations of fife-and-drum music will help explain how military orders were issued through the use of these instruments.

Regular musket firing demonstrations and tours of the "Firearms of Freedom" exhibit will round out the Veterans Day offerings.

Old Sturbridge Village Salutes the Cranberry

Get $5 off with Ocean Spray Labels

Early New Englanders relied on cranberries as an important survival food. Historical sources associate the cranberry with both Native American culture and early New Englanders' Thanksgiving celebrations. That's why Old Sturbridge Village is saluting the history of the cranberry during November and December 2008.logo

In conjunction with Ocean Spray's sponsorship of Thanksgiving at Old Sturbridge Village, the living history museum is making this special offer: Bring in any Ocean Spray product label and get $5 off daytime admission to the Village. There's a limit of one discount per label and four discounts per family. This discount is good through Jan. 31, 2009, and not valid with any other offer.

OSV's costumed interpreters will feature cranberry crafts and recipes on Thanksgiving Day (Nov. 27) and through the holiday weekend. In addition, Ocean Spray will be participating in the popular Christmas by Candlelight celebrations of Dec. 12-14 by distributing free cranberry food and beverage samplers from the historic Towne House kitchen.
